How to buy the best maternity bra online
The one thing that is certain during pregnancy is that everybody’s pregnancy is different. Even if you have multiple pregnancies yourself, each one will be different and your body’s changes will be as individual as every baby you have. That goes for your breasts, too. They may get bigger in the first three months and stay the same until your milk comes in. They may continue to grow along with your belly. You may breastfeed for three years or three months. I guess the common thread here is that everything grows (!!) so the best way to choose a maternity bra online is know your own body.
When should I get my first maternity bra?
For most women, you’ll know it’s time to get a new bra because your old bras will start to feel uncomfortable. In fact, breasts can feel sore and tender, and you’ll generally notice they are bigger as hormones start to change your body. This usually happens in the first three months of pregnancy, but as soon as you feel that your underwires are pressing on your breast tissue, or you’re starting to spill out of your cups, it’s time to get refitted. Even if you’re belly isn’t showing, it’s time to invest in new bras – and you’ve got lots of options available to you.
Do I have to wear a nursing bra? What are my choices?
Yes, you do have options and no matter what anyone says, it’s your body, your choice. If you’re breasts are quite heavy (and I mean GG cup and larger) then you might want to try a regular underwire bra in a bigger size. You don’t want to put undue pressure on your breasts or milk ducts, so you need to make sure you are regularly refitted throughout your pregnancy. Your bra fitter will explain that you should consistently monitor where the underwire sits so you can check if you need to be refitted again. To this end, you might want to look at our virtual bra fitting service, where we can fit you online, via skype, zoom or facetime. An experienced bra fitter can look at the bra you’re in and recommend some styles to try and a new size.
Another alternative is to wear a flexible wire (flexi-wire) bra. These bras have a very soft wire in them and are perfect to wear throughout your pregnancy up until you give birth. The wires are so soft the centre front (the gore) won’t sit flat (tack) against your body. But that’s ok, they won’t fit like a regular bra, they are made to mould to the shape of your ever- changing body. At Storm in a D cup, we know our bras and we’ve been fitting pregnant and nursing women for over 15 years. We carry maternity bras from two specialist maternity bra makers – Cake Maternity and Hotmilk – these two brands only make maternity bras, so we think they know their stuff. We also stock maternity bras from big cup expert brands including Panache, Elomi and Goddess. A good flexi-wire bra will have lower cup support and a stretch top cup to allow for fluctuations in size. At this time you might want to try a flexi-wire t-shirt bra, which is a bra with a seam free cup that won’t show up under your clothes. You’ll need at least three on rotation so get a few different colours and styles.
What’s the difference between a nursing bra, a maternity bra and a sports nursing bra?
In Europe, a maternity bra is worn while you’re pregnant and a nursing bra, or breastfeeding bra, is worn while you’re nursing. In Australia, New Zealand and parts of America and Canada nursing bras and maternity bras are one and the same – they all have nursing clips that allow you to drop the fabric of the cup to allow you to breastfeed. A pumping bra helps hold your breast pump in place, and they are not usually made to be very supportive for everyday activities. In fact they are great as a sleeping bra too. A maternity sports bra or nursing sports bra, simply means that the bra is made from sport-smart fabric, that is moisture wicking, breathable, with limited stretch to hold everything in place during exercise. They also have nursing clips on them so you can feed your baby before or after sport without having to get changed.
What do I take to hospital with me?
As your due date approaches it’s a good idea to get a couple super soft bras for when your breasts first get engorged with milk. Sugar Candy by Cake is a great for this, as is My Necessity by Hotmilk. You might also want a pumping bra that doubles as a sleep bra or some tank tops, like the Toffee Nursing tank, that also has drop down cups. You’ll also need some wire free breastfeeding bras now, and it’s a good idea to have several of them on rotation. If you stock up before birth and then you can’t wear the size you bought, don’t worry because Storm in a D cup offers 365 day exchanges and free returns on all our bras.
